Flex Shampoo for Normal to Dry Hair
BioGroom Super White Shampoo or
Clairol Shimmering Lights Shampoo
Nexxus Ensure or Nexxus Humectress
White Vinegar  Large plastic cup

I like to diffuse eucalyptus oil while bathing my cats. It helps clear the sinuses and the scent is very soothing and calming. As this is an essential oil which can be dangerous to cats, make sure you speak with an aromatherapist who specializes in treating felines.

Preparation

  • Make sure your house is nice and warm.
  • Place all bathing supplies within easy reach.
  • If your cat is a light champagne or natural color, use the Clairol Shimmering Lights Shampoo. If your cat is a dark champagne, platinum or blue cat, use Bio-Groom Super White Shampoo. The Nexxus Ensure is for a normal coat, the Nexxus Humectress is for a dry, stiff coat.
  • Close the bathroom door and turn the hot water on in the shower or bathtub to steam up the bathroom.
  • If you have a special hook-up in your shower for a pet hose use that, otherwise, wash your cat in an empty bathtub using a large plastic cup which you will keep filling with water.
  • Now, go and get your cat and two towels.
  • It is important to talk to your cat and tell him what you are doing. Your voice is a soothing sound and should make the cat more relaxed during his bath.
  • Never, ever wash your cats face or ears during the bath.
  • Quickly go into the bathroom so you do not bring in any cold air.

The Bath

[I bathe my cats while sitting on the floor in my shower stall. I have a pet hose (similar to a kitchen sink hose with an on/off lever) which is attached to my shower head. These instructions are for washing a cat in an empty bathtub or large sink. If you have a pet hose, make sure the water is on low force.]
  • Adjust the water so that it is lukewarm.
  • Using the large plastic cup, fill with water and saturate your cat's body with lukewarm water without getting the head wet!
  • Squirt a little of the Flex into your hand and gently massage into your cat's fur. The Flex will remove any unwanted residue or buildup from prior shampooing and grooming.
  • Thoroughly rinse the Flex out of the fur using the large plastic cup filled with water.
  • Use the Clairol Shimmering Lights or Bio-Groom Super White Shampoo and gently massage into his fur.
  • Thoroughly rinse out the shampoo using the large plastic cup filled with water.
  • Add one tablespoon of vinegar to your plastic cup and fill with warm water. Pour the solution over your cat. This removes all traces of the shampoo.
  • Thoroughly rinse out the vinegar using the large plastic cup filled with water.
  • Use a small amount of the conditioner and leave on your cat for one minute, kissing him and talking to him while he is waiting.
  • Rinse out thoroughly using the plastic cup filled with water. When you think you have removed all the conditioner, rinse your cat one more time.
  • Turn off the water and gently squeeze the excess water from your cat.

Drying Your Cat

  • Wrap your cat up with the first towel, blotting out as much water as possible, then put it aside.
  • Using the second towel, dry your cat by rubbing gently, but firmly.
  • Steam up the bathroom again, by turning on the hot water for a few minutes while you are towel drying your cat.
  • Leave your cat in the warm bathroom for one-half hour so he can continue to dry himself in the comfort of the warm bathroom without getting a chill.
  • When you let your cat out of the bathroom, immediately have a toy ready so you can play with him. You want to make sure he has fun and take his mind off the bath!
  • Do not brush or groom your cat until the morning of the show.
