Naturally Raised

Selkatz Tonkinese are raised naturally through diet and alternative approaches.  Selkatz Tonkinese are fed a natural homemade fresh raw food diet consisting of naturally raised whole body rabbit, venison, whole body chicken, whole body cornish hen, turkey, lamb, buffalo and caribou. Only the highest quality of vitamins and minerals are used in my VitaMin Mix.  Selkatz Tonkinese have healthy and shiny coats, clear eyes, great loving personalities and overall outstanding health and vitality.  There is no nasty litter box odor as well!

Cats are carnivores.   In the wilderness, the natural diet consists of what the cat can hunt down and kill that day, so they may nosh on a rabbit, a quail, a duck, or something else that a fellow furry hunter might have left behind.  A mouse contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals for a cat and he knows it.  In the old days when we let our cats run outdoors, to show their love for us :-) they would bring home a mouse!  Well, since we live in a world of cars, coyotes and disease, cats should be kept indoors and therefore, no longer have the opportunity to hunt.   BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) is a way to bring the natural wilderness to them.

Since domestic cats are descended from the small African cat, their physiology is still very much like that of the desert animal's physiology, so they need to get moisture (water) from their food.  One of the many risks of a strict dry food diet is feline lower urinary tract disease ("FLUTD").  FLUTD is something that CAN be prevented.  Another risk of strictly dry food is chronic renal failure ("CRF").  I cannot tell you how many people have told me their cats died from kidney failure or CRF.  Dry food is very hard on the kidneys, unless of course the cat drinks lots and lots and lots of water, which is highly unlikely. Cats just cannot drink the amount of water they need to counteract the negative effects of dry food.  From that particular point of view, wet food is better.

I use fresh raw chicken necks and wings, as well as whole chicken hearts and chunks of fresh london broil so my cats have to work a bit at "hunting" and "killing" their prey, while strengthing their teeth.  I have tried to replicate the mouse and the contents of his stomach by adding the proper vitamins and supplements to the raw food diet.

My recipes are designed to replicate what a cat in wild would eat.  The heart which is rich in taurine, for example, is destroyed by cooking the food, as are other important vitamins and nutrients that are essential to a happy and healthy cat.  So in order for the cat to fully benefit from a natural diet, the food needs to be completely raw.  Have you ever seen a group of cats gathered around a campfire cooking their prey?  Of course not.

The supplements needed for this diet can easily be purchased at any health food store, or on line vitamin shop. Use a different animal each time you make The Basic Raw Food Recipe for variety.  The Whole Body Animal Recipe requires some elbow grease, but actually is a closer match to a perfect meal since the whole animal is utilized.  The recipe requires a heavy duty meat grinder capable of grinding chicken bones.  I recommend the Villaware Food Grinder from Chef's Catalog, item #0606. This grinder is on sale for $99 including shipping, so go check it out.

The first question I am asked is about parasites and bacteria.  I feel that the risk of disease to cats due to not feeding raw meat is much greater than the risk of bacteria or parasites.  I have been feeding raw food for seven years and I have not once encountered any type of bacteria or parasite.
